Packing Iron Photography

Away from my day job, I really enjoy using veteran and vintage film cameras. Cameras dating from the early 1900s are often relatively easy to use, and cameras from the 1930s to the 1980s are even more user-friendly – you just need some basic knowledge and a film that can cost little more than the price of a posh coffee!

After many years of experience with various film cameras, I would enjoy sharing some of this knowledge. I am pleased to be able to offer a range of services, including tuition on how to use older cameras, plus event photography and demonstrations.

Photographic courses

My photographic courses are one-to-one, or one-to-two if a friend would like to do the course at the same time. They are designed to be simple and student-led, so you get the maximum out of the course even if you have never used a film camera before.

If you own a camera you would like to use, that’s great – just tell me in advance so I can do a little research on that specific camera if needed. However, I do have a number of cameras available for use on the course, so there is no need to rush out and buy one.

My aim is to make film photography an accessible and budget-friendly hobby, with a couple of different course options:

Option 1:

3 hours of tuition, to include the following:

Understanding film and camera types and limitations; loading and unloading film; assessing light conditions; setting aperture, speed and focus on the camera; advice on buying cameras.

We would meet at a mutually convenient local park or historic site and, after covering the basics in my mobile classroom/dark room (a converted Land Rover ambulance!), would shoot a roll of film together on a scenic photo walk.

Cost £90 (£120 for two students), which includes the use of a camera if needed, and a roll of black and white film.

Option 2:

6 hours of tuition, to include everything under Option , plus:

Developing films and either scanning negatives into a computer or making cyanotype contact prints.

Cost £160 (£195 for two students).

Event Photography and Demonstrations

I can bring my cameras and darkroom to your event!

If you would like to have a very different record of a special day, I can take photos and develop and produce prints on-site using traditional methods and equipment. If required, I can do demonstrations of developing and printing techniques, and at the end of the day you will receive a number of 1840s-style mounted cyanotype prints.

This is very much a tailor-made service, designed to fit your needs.

My day rate is all-inclusive, starting from £250.

(Please note, I am based in Surrey)
